Mashuu Dojo - Shinkendo: the way of samurai swordsmanship

Founded by Obata Toshishiro Kaiso on four decades of Japanese martial art experience Shinkendo is a modern martial art with a direct lineage that goes back over 12 centuries of samurai tradition.

Training emphasizes the five equally important aspects of swordsmanship:

  • 1.Suburi: Fundamental body movement, foot work, and sword movement.
  • 2.Battho: Different ways of drawing and sheating the sword.
  • 3.Tanrengata: solo forms.
  • 4.Tachiuchi: practicing with a partner.
  • 5.Tameshigiri: test cutting.

Mashuu Dojo is the only authorized branch of the International Shinkendo Federation in the San Fernando Valley. Mashuu Dojo's head instructor is Matthew Lynch, a Senior Student of Obata Toshishiro and Instructor at the Shinkendo World Headquarters in Little Tokyo Los Angeles.

Join them Sunday at 11:20 in the Plaza del Sol for a Shinkendo demo and in LP3 at 12:00 to learn more about this martial art.

Dr. Roger Gibbs : The Odyssey to Mars

USU Theater : Friday, Dr. Roger Gibbs, Mars Odyssey Deputy Project Manager will present The Odyssey to Mars. This talk focuses on how the Mars Exploration Program learned from its failures, and how the Odyssey team ultimately overcame the difficulties in delivering their spacecraft on time and on target into orbit around Mars. The presentation will describe how Odyssey is unveiling mysteries of Mars' mineral and elemental composition, and how Odyssey fits into the broader Mars Exploration Program objective to "follow the water," seeking to determine if life ever arose on Mars. Jishin Taiko: Taiko Basics

Join Jishin Taiko members this year as they teach you how to play Kumi-Daiko (group taiko) following their performance in the Plaza del Sol Friday afternoon.

Taiko at Home: A homemade Taiko & Bachi

Now that you know the basics, we will also have a separate mini workshop where you can learn how to make a drum and bachi (drum sticks) with materials around your home for around $20!
